And Jon was telling me, We want to know what you wanna do. Aynsley Dunbar had played with everybody. So the first gig I did with him, I was just learning the songs. But the reason I do that is so I can listen back to all the things I played and pick out the parts that worked and sounded good. I would suggest that anybody who feels tired and worn out on stage, check out the nearest Nautilus center and go into a program. I completely understand how they felt and why, and I want to make sure thats clear. RM: Do you structure your solos any particular way? And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the. And our bass player Richard Michaels got killed in a Fourth of July holiday accident on the freeway. I had no desire to. I look at it like this: as long as the solo went down, well-that's fine. And Ive played some of the stuff for friends, and for some people that arent afraid to tell me the truth. What happened was, I was in Los Angeles, trying to get signed, with a band that I was in at the timeit was called the Alien Project, but it was also called Street Talk. But if you're backing up a soloist, the fill you played on the record might not get behind what he's doing on stage at that particular moment, because he's doing something different. Herbie built that band around Neal because hes a star on his own from a guitar standpoint. And I think what Steve felt at that point that he wanted to fold the band and go back to working on his grandfathers ranch. It feels better. And so we kept waiting around to see if he was gonna go take care of it. I didnt jump into that. And it was all based around Steve giving us a call and saying Okay, Im fine now, Im ready to go. And it just didnt happen. RM: How did you decide on your particular style? Thats an interesting comment. Your activity looks suspicious to us. I went from playing seven days a week with Mayall to one day a month with Beck. I mean, back roads, where theres no cars, where theres nothing but coyotes. And those lyrics are a big part of it. What I thought I had to be? So I thought, . And I was not gonna be part of that. But I don't feel I want to jump on that particular bandwagon. I did four months with Jeff, but he only liked to work about one day a month, which was not enough for me. RM: Of all the albums you've played on, which ones stand out in your mind? Do you think there were things you would have dealt with differently if you were sober? AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. A lot of times, I drive the band, not by playing every 16th note, but by playing the second, third and fourth 16th note, leaving the downbeat and the up- beat open. For about 5 years, every day I'd get out of bed and do exercises, and then I'd do one arm push-ups to pump blood into my arms before I went on stage. AD: I've always liked Max Roach. There was no ad-lib with them. The music was a mix of instrumental orientated rock-fusion and progressive tunes with vocals. I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. And Ill tell you, to this day, I dont understand what that meant. I still am, somewhat. I know that sounds intense, but I had to take care of myself. It's a situation that you have to grow into. If you go back to that, what are you going back to now? It's something I was thinking about, but it is to the point where it sounds like everybody's done it all with what's there. They don't understand it. They were already acting like stars. During one of my first gigs with them, they gave me a drum solo. May 8th, 1998, was the total release from all our contracts, and from Sony. It could be east of Vine. What happened was, I guess Jon and Neal had signed off way before I did. He started playing violin, but he later changed to drums. So I came home, took care of that, went back, finished the vocals and stuff, and before I know it, were on tour. RM: Do you have a set of pads in your dressing room? AD: When he's soloing, I tend to try and watch him because it's not only hearing it's also eye contact. Im not whining. RM: The Starship rhythm section is really solid. Anything worth anything has got to be that way. So I decided it was time to get rid of that band arid start another one. Nowadays I get complaints about long drum solos, but in those days they wanted me to keep on going so they could go over to the bar and have a drink. And Id sleep, and Id wake up, go do the gig, and the same thing would happen all over again. At this point, it seems that it will be a rock and roll album. There was a time that the press, and especially Rolling Stone, decided to call usand by us I mean Foreigner, Journey, Styxthey called us faceless bands. All through the years. Was that a hard pill to swallow at first? While all of that was going on, Zappa came to town and left a message for me to talk to him. It worries the hell out of everybody else because I'm changing things all over the place and it almost sounds like a drum solo. Listening to what he was doing, and listening to what we were doingit was like A to Z. I was goin, How are we gonna morph this together and make it work?. Steve! How do you draw the line between playing freely enough for yourself and at the same time, being consistent enough that the rest of the band knows what you're doing? After not having played on stage for several months, that was a lot of stran, but after wards I felt like I could have gone on and played some more. leave t.hat .hole, the snare stands out big, and it still sounds like you're playing the bass drum on that beat. It was self-indulgent music. Everything's electronic. But I didnt see it until the first time it aired, that Sunday night. After you've been around a while, you understand that you can't play everything you've ever wanted to play. We just try not to talk about him. Called Patiently. It began at that point for me, with the band. At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. It was like getting over some kind of love affair, you know. We redid everything. That part she had was incredibly difficult, but she did an amazing job. I work hard the first day, then take one day off; then sort of a lighter workout on the middle day, with a day off; and then tough on the third day, with two days off afterward. Did you enjoy working with another drummer? Okay. So were listening and goin, Wow, this guys got an amazing voice, but does he fit with us? Because it was a radical change. The answer is of course theres differences between us all! You became one of the biggest bands in the world. And I hope you print that, because its important that people know that. I was also looking after Jeff as far as that was concerned. Well, Steve came out with us and started hangin outhe was hangin with me, actually, and we were roomin together, and I pulled out an acoustic guitar, and one of the first songs we wrote, in about a half an hour, was Patiently. And he will not allow me to have his number. I joined the band in 1978. RM: I presume you could have your choice of drum companies. He didn't have any idea of which side of the beat he was on half of the time. But a few more days of the hazards of what was going on made me decide that it was time to disband Blue Whale I didn't sign any contracts or anything else with Zappa-just moved out of England. We'd sit down and play along with big-band charts. So I went to this club and we chatted about me coming over and joining his band, but 1 couldn't give an answer because l wasn't sure if I wanted to disband my group. I'd like to know what pedal he used. I wasnt sure what the Sopranos use was gonna be. You think? Cause we didnt sound alike. And then the day after, I was at the airport, and youd think we had a hit single again. At some point, in all our lives, wed all contributed to that star on the ground. So I was about ready to crash and didnt know it. Thats right. Since 1968, Cynthia has cast over 48 famous rock singers', guitar players', and managers' penises. You can play quietly in a small area and it doesn't matter, but in big areas, people have to see movement on stage. So it can make any singer a little crazy.
